I crave sugar. I crave sugar when I’m hungry, angry, depressed or when I have a flashback which stars a Berger cookie.
You can fight what you don’t have. Get the chips, cookies, candy, pies, cakes, chips and ice cream out of the house.
Will your family rebel if you remove these snacks and stop bringing them home? Here’s an option. Get a bin and put all the junk food in it and stow it away. Out of your sight, mostly out of your mind.
Your next step is to get your family snacking better. Stick healthy snacks in the snack bin and wait your family out. As the old folks say, if they get hungry they’ll eat it. Refuse to buy it. You can’t control what family eats outside of the house, so get them in the habit of eating better at home. It will affect their eating habits overall.
Like the squirrel that gnawed his way into my house. He ate a roll and some sliced bread, leftover French fries (they weren’t mine; okay they were mine but I only ate 5 or 6) and the souvenir candy from a family wedding, washed down with a few grapes. The next day, after I removed his preferred dietary choices, he went for the spiny pineapple. Even a squirrel will eat junk food first before going for a more healthy choice. Once I emptied his pantry, he went for the fruit. (It took another day to trap that rascal.)
Another tactic to fight cravings is to make your own snacks from scratch. The food industry is putting additives in our food to make us eat more. Just check out an October 2013 study that proved that Oreos were more addictive than cocaine. Do you think Oreos have naturally occurring, crack-like properties? And guess what’s the best selling cookie in the US in the 21st century. Or remember the old Lays potato chip slogan “Betcha can’t eat just one”? I betcha I know why.

As someone who lets her cravings get away from her and suffering from the results, I’m constantly working on changing my ways. Drinking more water to stay hydrated and eating a protein/fat/fiber snack when hungry are two tactics I’m using now to banish my sugar cravings.
Never give up the fight.
